Taiwan and Indonesia are bound by strong ties of friendship. I also trust that the Tsai administration will continue to expand ur relations under the aegis of #NewSouthboundPolicy.
As we approach the New Normal, I look forward to more economic, political, and people-to-people exchanges with the Emerald of the Equator.
Today is also a day to reflect on how we, the people of Taiwan, can make our relationship with Indonesia more equitable. Taiwan benefits from the economic and cultural contributions of over quarter million Indonesian women and men who chose to call our country their home. Despite their positive impact on Taiwan, they are often met with injustice: the proposed Taipei Main Station sitting ban, the broken broker system for migrant workers, unwarranted ethnocentrism… These are all examples of imprudence I pledge to combat.
I, too, make mistakes. But I pledge to be a better ally.
I shall make use of my platform to educate myself, to amplify the stifled voices, and to speak up against ignorance.
